アクション｜アートギャラリーの創設
吉川さんは街で廃墟となったプレス工場を見つけ出し、その１階の空間をアーティストのアトリエ兼ギャラリーとして改修（リノベーション）し、再生した。建築ユニットとして自ら設計と施工を行うだけでなく、数多くのイベントや個展などを誘致して開催していった。既存の廃墟的な味わいを残しつつ、路地のような空間とオープンな構えを大切にしたデザインによって、そこには誰もが覗きたくなるような場所が実現されている。
Action | The Foundation of anArt Gallery
Mr. Yoshikawa founded an art gallery / atelier in an unused factory he found in the town. The factory was 2 storied; He rebuilt the 1st floor as the gallery and the 2nd floor as a co-residence with his colleagues. As an Architectural unit, not only does he designs and constructs objects he wishes to create, but he also coordinates a lot of events and solo exhibitions for local artists. While the gallery sustains its unused, ruined taste, the space is designed to have an alley-like but somehow open atmosphere, and thus the gallery has become a place where everyone wants to peep in.
マチ｜東京都墨田区 文花
この活動は建設中のスカイツリーがそびえる街で始まった。都心ながらも周辺には高い建物も少なく、古い住宅街が広がっている。2012 年にスカイツリーが隣町に完成し、タワマン建設など開発の気配が近づいてくる一方で、この界隈は依然としてのびのびとした空気が残り、新たな活動を受け入れる懐の広さもあった。そんな舞台の上で、自分の生み出した場を着実に増やしていくことに活動の醍醐味を感じたそうだ。
FIELD | Bunka, Sumida-Ku, Tokyo
His activity began at Mukojima in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, where Tokyo SkyTree (Japanese television broadcasting tower and a landmark) is built. In the neighborhood area, there are not so many tall buildings placed, and the atmosphere of old residential areas remains.
With the completion of the SkyTree in 2012, and the construction of tower blocks and other signs of development approaching, the neighborhood still had a relaxed atmosphere and was open to new activities.

ハナサカ｜吉川晃司さんKoji YOSHIKAWA
1985年東京都生まれ。筑波大学芸術専門学群建築デザイン領域卒業。墨田区での活動当時は設計事務所で働く傍ら、建築ユニット「スタジオまめちょうだい」としてリノベーションや家具の設計、まちづくり活動をしていた。現在は宮城県気仙沼市八日町地区に拠点を移して活動中。
Born in Tokyo in 1985, He graduated from the University of Tsukuba, Faculty of Art and Design, Architectural Design Area. While working at a design office, he was also involved in renovation, furniture design, and community development activities as an architectural unit called "Studio Mamechodai (it means give me the beans)”. He is currently based in the Yoka-cho district of Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture.
ハジマリ｜予感のする町で、何かがしたい
「墨田の町がおもしろい。」芸術系大学で建築を学んだ後、関東の拠点を探していた吉川さんは、不動産会社に務める仲間から墨田区の向島・文花を勧められた。これから盛り上がる町に何か面白い場所を生み出したい、そんな熱を抱え足早に現地の不動産屋を訪れた。物件を尋ねてまわるうち、遂にがらんどうの、魅力的な廃墟と出会う。すぐにこの廃墟を使って、大学時代から付き合いのあるアーティストたちと構想していた、アトリエ兼ギャラリーのような場所”float”を作ることになった。

MOTIVATION | Following the Vibes and Taking Actions
He knew that the area would be a hot spot in the future. After studying architecture at an arts university, he was looking for a place where he can touch on to start his own projects. A friend who works at a real estate company recommended the Mukojima Bunka area in Sumida-ku. “This place must be an intriguing place. I want to make a spot that interests people.” With the passion in mind, he immediately visited its local real estate agency. While asking around for properties, he finally encountered an attractive abandoned building; untouched and empty in a good way. Renovations of the building were too much for him to handle by himself, so he approached some of his fellow artists from college. And they decided to build a gallery/ atelier "float" together.
ヘンカ｜住宅地のうねり
初作float をオープンしイベントを開催すると、面白がって人々が集まるようになった。出会ったことのない「面白い人達」との繋がりが想像を超えて広がり、活動の価値を確信したそうだ。次第に界隈にはリノベーションのトレンドが生まれた。背の低い家並みの中に目新しい活動が植え込まれていく流れは街に定着していき、小さな仕掛けを放つ人々のネットワークが築かれていった。
IMPACT | The Swell of the Residential Area
When he opened his first ‘float’ and held an event, people started to gather in his place out of curiosity. Through the events, the connection with "interesting people" he had never met before expanded beyond his imagination, and he became convinced of the value of his project. Gradually, renovation has become a trend in the neighborhood. The wave of ‘new activities being planted in the streets’ were settled in the city, and a network of people who launches small projects was built.

ツナガリ｜改修をとりまくもの
これらの活動をする以前から、吉川さんは”スタジオまめちょうだい”という建築ユニットを結成し、空間とアートを軸に点々と仕掛けを起こしていた。そうしたベースに加え、floatの完成で繋がりが格段に増えた。繋がっていくことが吉川さんのモチベーションであり、仕掛けて、出会って、それをきっかけに仕掛けて、の繰り返しで「開発」が広がっているそうだ。初期のfloatでは場所代をあまり受け取らず、展示やイベントなどの「面白いこと」が起きることを促していたこともポイントだ。
ECOSYSTEM | What Surrounds the Renovation
Before he started his activities in Bunka, Mr. Yoshikawa had formed an architectural unit called "Studio Mame Chodai" and worked on various projects related to ‘space’ and ‘art'. In addition to the network he had from these previous activities, the completion of ‘float’ has greatly increased his networks. It is also important to note that he does not charge as much for its space fee. Instead, he prioritizes that ‘something is happening’ in the place, such as exhibitions.
ステップ｜初期の体験が世界を開いた
「気になる物件を覗くと、そこには既に「面白い人たち」が活動していて、いたって対等に向き合ってくれたんです。町に来て間もない頃でした。」この小さな体験が、社会は一介の若者にも開かれているのだ、という感覚をもたらし、吉川さんの世界を一気に開いた。▷自ら不動産屋や物件への突撃を重ねていき、魅力的な物件に出会う。▷アトリエを作る仲間を巻き込むことでモチベーションを保ち、プロジェクトの実現に繋げた。
STEP | The First Experience Opened Up the World.
“When I looked at a property that I was interested in, I found that there were already 'interesting people' working there, and they were very friendly to me. It was my first experience in the town.” This small experience gave Mr. Yoshikawa the sense that this society is open to young people and opened up his world at once. ▷He visited a lot of real estate agencies and looked for properties on his own, and came across a fascinating propertie. ▷He was able to maintain his motivation by involving his friends in creating the atelier, which led him to the realization of the project.

コツ｜くるくる巡れば見えてくる
自転車に乗って界隈をくるくる回っていると、徐々に表に出てこない町の情報が見えてくるという。空きそうな物件、新たなテナント募集の張り紙。アンテナを張り続けることがこの味わい深い「開発」のコツと言えそうだ。さらに吉川さんは実績を増やすために、改修後の住み手になってもらう後輩と一緒に物件を探して、彼らのための改修費用を出資したこともあったそうだ。それでも余りある実りがあるのだろう。とにかく場所を作りたい、という人には参考になりそうだ。
TIPS | Going Around
As he went around the neighborhood on his bicycle, he gradually began to see hidden local information: a vacant property, a sign asking for new tenants. It seems that the key to such tasty "development" is to keep your antenna up. In order to increase his track record, Mr. Yoshikawa invited his junior staff members to live in the ‘float’ and paid all the fees needed for their renovation; even so, the investment comes with much reward. This tip may be useful for those who want to create a new community place.
コレカラ｜次なる拠点で自分の「コマ」を置いていく
floatの後には”あをば荘”、”セコリ荘”などリノベーションの連作を生み出していった吉川さんは、町に自分の「コマ」を置いていくような感覚でこの活動を楽しんでいるそうだ。さらに空間同士がコラボするイベントも企画し、絶えず場を生み出している。現在は気仙沼に移住し、ふたたび地道につながりを開拓しつつ活動を展開しているとのこと。どこの町であろうと、吉川さんの置いたコマから生まれるつながりはこの先も限りなく広がっていく。
FOR THE FUTURE | Mapping Pawn in the New Town
After founding the ‘float’, Mr. Yoshikawa created a series of renovation projects: "Aoba-so" and "Sekori-so". He is enjoying this ‘making new community place’ activity as if he were placing his own "pawns" in the town. Also, he constantly holds collaborative events between spaces to spaces, which leads to creating new places. Currently, he has moved to Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture and is developing his new activities again through steadily cultivating local connections. Wherever he is, the connections created by the pawns he placed will continue to expand endlessly.
